Context determines the quality of a follow-up
Follow-up feels uncomfortable when it reads as though the last conversation never happened.
A thoughtful follow-up returns to the other person’s goal, an open decision, or a timing commitment you already made together. It shows that you listened and that you respect the pace of the relationship.
Make the next step specific
Instead of writing “follow up next week,” capture “confirm by Thursday whether the decision-maker reviewed the revised proposal.” A useful next step includes timing, action, and reason.
Relationships do not have to move through pressure. When every interaction continues the thread, the right next step becomes easier to see.
